Tillie Walk - Fall 2000The Centenary Stage Company will again offer the popular "Tillie Walk," an historically narrated tour of 19th Century Hackettstown led by costumed guides. Participants will trace the path of Tillie Smith's last night before her notorious murder in 1886.

The Walk

In 1898, the murder of Tillie Smith, a kitchen maid at the Centenary Collegiate Institute catapulted Hackettstown into the eye of the national press. On Sunday, Oct. 27th at 1 PM, the Centenary Stage Company will lead our final historic walk through Hackettstown, tracing the route that Tillie Smith walked on the night of her murder over 100 years ago. Actors costumed in period dress from 1898 will lead participants from the meeting place, at the theatre lobby, through the downtown area, stopping at several points on the route and pointing out places where Tillie walked and stopped on the fateful night. The guides will point out, with historical narration, buildings and elements of the town which were significant at the time of the event.

The walk will conclude on the grounds of Centenary College, where the ghost of Tillie Smith has been reported to still be seen from time to time. This final walk will conclude just prior to the final performance of The Tillie Project now being performed at Centenary Stage Company Oct 11 - 27, 2002. See "Tickets" for fee credits below.

The Tillie Walk is part of a larger play development project at Centenary Stage Company, crafting The Tillie Project play from a moment in Hackettstown's own history.

Tickets

We'll meet at the gazebo for this final walk Sunday, Oct 27 beginning at 1 PM, ending at the theatre at 2 PM immediately preceding the final performance of The Tillie Project at 2:30 pm. Ticket holders for the Sunday matinee, and those who have tickets from prior performances may use their tickets to waive the $5 fee for the walk. OR - Those that pay the $5 for the walk, may have that price deducted from the price of their ticket for the show. Tickets may be purchased there at the gazebo on the day of the walk.
