scrub brushes, wrestling a boa constrictor, and limbing mountains when an innocent milk-and-cookie nack time goes from mishap to calamity to catastrophe faster than the twitch of a whisker.

A Thousand Cranes

A Thousand Cranes
Adapted for the stage by:   Kathryn Schultz Miller
Story about Sadako written by:  Eleanor Coerr

This is a true and poignant story of the young Japanese girl Sadako Sasaki, who inspired an international peace movement. This stylized production combines Japanese and American language, music and dance, highlighting Japanese society in the aftermath of WWII.

Sadako was 2 years old when the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima where she lived. She developed radiation sickness (leukemia) at the age of 12. She is reminded of the old story about cranes: If a sick person makes 1000 origami cranes, the gods will grant her a wish and make her healthy again.

Sadako did not live to finish 1000 cranes but her friends completed her task and built a monument to her and all children killed by the atomic bomb.

Run time 40 minutes.

Appropriate for Middle School and High School.

1 performance $625, same day each additional performance $375.
