   Peter Hand

Peter Hand
Guitarist, composer and arranger has been performing in settings ranging from solo guitar to big band for many years. A New York City native, he began studying guitar in his teens and was especially influenced by the blues guitar sounds of B.B. King and Albert King. Peter led his own blues and R & B bands before attending Berklee College of Music. At Berklee, Peter became immersed in the music of Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, Duke Ellington, Billy Strayhorn, Gil Evans, Charles Mingus, Wes Montgomery and Antonio Carlos Jobim, among many others. His early interest in arranging for small groups blossomed into his majoring in jazz composition, and he studied big band arranging with the legendary Herb Pomeroy, earning a B.M. degree in Composition.

Peter has been active as a sideman and arranger, as well as leading his own trio, quartet, ten piece band, and most recently the Peter Hand Big Band. His credits include work with the George Coleman Octet, the Lee Konitz Nonet, Carmen Lundy, Claudio Roditi, Mike Abene, Victor Lewis, the Aspen Music Festival Jazz Orchestra, the Kansas City Jazz Orchestra, the Peter Hand Central New York Jazz Orchestra and the Williamstown (MA) Jazz Festival.

In 2005, Peter launched the Peter Hand Big Band, collaborating again with Houston Person who performed Peter’s arrangements of music by Harold Arlen. The band also included many outstanding jazz musicians, and a CD, The Peter Hand Big Band Featuring Houston Person – The Wizard of Jazz: A Tribute To Harold Arlen was released on Savant Records in 2009. It received excellent reviews in Billboard Magazine, Audiophile Audition, JazzTimes and All About Jazz, and was named on several "year’s best" lists, including by critic Dan Morgenstern, who cited it as one of the best CDs of 2009 on "Jazz from the Archives," WBGO, and by Detroit jazz radio host Ed Love. The Wizard of Jazz played extensively on jazz radio stations nationwide, staying on the Jazz Week chart for ten weeks.

Houston Person
   Houston Person

Houston Person
Dubbed "the natural heir to the Boss Tenor crown worn so long and so well by Gene Ammons" (Bob Porter), global performer Houston knows the music business inside out, from booking his own tours to producing his own albums. As eclectic as he is talented, Person has recorded everything from disco and gospel to pop and r&b, in addition to his trademark, soulful hard bop.

Described as "jazz's working class hero, a true man of the people," Houston Person came to national attention with a series of soulful albums recorded for Prestige in the 1960s. Person's fame grew still more with his successful 30-year musical partnership with vocalist Etta Jones. Numerous recording artists—including Lena Horne, Lou Rawls and Horace Silver—have also called on Person to perform on their albums. A passionate tenor saxophonist, alternately tough and tender, Person is now recognized as one of today's leading instrumentalists .Person is now known as a master of popular songs played in a relaxed, highly accessible style and has been a guiding light on the contemporary jazz scene.
