The tradition of “World Music” has roots as deep as music itself, from Bach’s French Suites to Paul Simon’s “Graceland.” One of the more striking explorations into the genre today comes from the dynamic contemporary ensemble, Atzilut, which combines the heritage of Arab and Jewish musical traditions in a jubilant, high–energy program of music, featuring the sounds and rhythms of the Eastern Europe and the middle east. The lyrical sounds of “oud,” or middle eastern lute, the haunting notes of the “nai,” with its roots in the Pan Flute of pre-classical Greece, the compelling rhythms of the tabla, as well as the violin, double reeds, bass and vocals, come together to create a vibrant musical experience that audiences have called “magical” and “powerful.” The eleven member ensemble Atzilute will celebrate the common roots of Arab and Jewish musical traditions on the Centenary Stage on Saturday, April 16 at 8 PM.
